Spring has most certainly arrived here in San Francisco, and those familiar with us at the motel will have seen our gardens quite literally spring into action—bursting into a vibrant tapestry of color and growth. Our migratory hummingbirds have recently returned in all their iridescent glory, joining the resident species that call our garden home.
Keeping with the horticultural theme, spring is the perfect time to explore San Francisco’s wealth of parks, green spaces, and outdoor activities. One standout event this season is the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, a beloved celebration of Japanese culture and heritage. This year’s festival takes place in Japantown on the weekends of April 12–13 and 19–20, 2025.
Since its beginnings in 1968, the festival has blossomed into one of the largest cherry blossom festivals outside of Japan. It’s free and open to the public, with a few special events requiring separate admission. The festivities include traditional arts, cultural performances, live music, the annual Queen Program, and more. One major highlight is the Grand Parade, which stretches over a mile from Civic Center Plaza to Japantown, featuring a wonderful display of cultural and community organizations.
For those seeking a more tranquil experience, we highly recommend a visit to the Palace of Fine Arts Gardens, located just a leisurely four-block stroll from the motel. The gardens border a peaceful lake teeming with wildlife—storks, herons, and various species of duck, all showing off their colorful plumage and animated personalities. With its dramatic architecture resembling the ruins of an ancient Greek temple, the Palace offers a breathtaking backdrop for a quiet afternoon or some stunning photography.
Also nearby, just two blocks from the motel, is the Lombard Street entrance to The Presidio. This extraordinary parkland—once a military base and now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area—is ideal for families, nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone looking to relax by one of the world’s most beautiful bays. The Presidio is full of surprises: from hidden scenic trails to film-history cameos (Lucasfilm has offices in the park), to fascinating museums and inviting cafes perfect for a mid-walk break.
Whether you're visiting for the blooms, the birds, or a bit of both, spring is a truly magical time to explore San Francisco.
